When it comes to tensioning a bandsaw blade, the deflection method is one of the most commonly used techniques. Here’s how it works:

  1. Apply moderate finger pressure to the side of the blade at an unrestrained section (typically between the wheels, where the blade is not under any pressure).
  2. The blade should deflect approximately 1/4″ (for general cutting tasks). For more demanding tasks like resawing or cutting thicker materials, 1/8″ of deflection is sufficient.

2. The “Flutter” Method

Another technique I use frequently, especially when setting the tension for precision cuts, is the flutter method. This method is especially useful for fine-tuning the tension.

Here’s how to position them correctly:

  • Turn the bandsaw on and let the blade run.
  • Adjust the side guides so they are as close to the blade as possible without touching it. They should be positioned in such a way that they only engage with the blade when pressure is applied during a cut.
